Subject: Availability of data analysis software: SAL 1.2

We are pleased to announce the release of SAL 1.2, a software tool for
prototyping data analysis applications. SAL is based on the Spatial
Aggregation theory and algorithms developed by researchers at Ohio
State University, MIT, and Xerox PARC.

The SAL tool comprises a C++ library supplying commonly used data
types and operators for data intensive modeling and abstraction, and
an interpreter providing a MATLAB-like interactive interface to
facilitate rapid prototyping of application programs using the SAL
library. It can be either run as a standalone tool or integrated into
an existing application with a C++ interface. The SAL release also
includes a HTML documentation and small sample programs written in SAL
that illustrate what it takes to write code using SAL. For
larger-scale applications, SAL has been used to analyze weather
datasets and to model spatio-temporal structures from
diffusion-reaction phenomena. It was also used by students at Stanford
University (CS329) and Ohio State University (CIS788) as a software
prototyping environment for class projects.
