"Tools for Discovering Patterns in Data"
by Dr. John Elder

This popular tutorial surveys the leading computer-intensive methods for
pattern discovery. The inner workings of algorithms drawn from data
mining, statistics, and machine learning are described and compared. We'll
also explore the capabilities of commercial and academic tools and the
relative effectiveness of their algorithms on practical applications.

Topics include:
Pattern Discovery: Benefits and Dangers
Classical Statistical Techniques (brief review)
Modern Methods (incl. Neural Networks, Polynomial Networks, Decision Trees)
Key General Tools (visualization, regularization, resampling)
Data Dangers (case studies)
Comparing and Combining Methods

The instructor, John Elder, heads a data mining consulting firm in
Charlottesville, Virginia (http://www.datamininglab.com). He's written and
spoken widely on pattern discovery techniques, is active on statistical and
engineering journals and boards, and has authored some influential data
mining tools. Dr. Elder's 15 years of successful experience with
commercial and military applications - including credit scoring, direct
marketing, sales forecasting, stock selection, drug efficacy, flight
control, and fraud detection - are key to illustrating the tutorial concepts.
