Subject: Faculty Position at Virginia Tech
The Department of Computer Science at Virginia Tech seeks candidates to
fill four tenure-track, full-time, academic year (9 month) appointments
for teaching and research faculty members. Appointments will begin in August
2000 or as appropriate. New faculty members are sought at the Assistant
Professor rank, although exceptional individuals at senior ranks will be
considered. Successful candidates will complement departmental research
strengths, participate in innovative teaching practices, and improve faculty
diversity. The university is deeply committed to recruiting, selecting, promoting,
and retaining women, persons of color, and persons with disabilities. We
strongly value diversity in the college community and seek to assure equality
in education and employment.

We are particularly interested in candidates with research and teaching
interests in one or more of the following areas. Active work in the department
is located in parentheses.

       - digital libraries, information storage & retrieval, databases
         (world leader in electronic theses and dissertations, digital
         library laboratory)

       - user interface software and tools (world leader in
         human-computer interaction, Center for HCI, advanced
         usability labs)

       - software engineering (planned specialized MS program)

       - high performance computing (Paragon, SP/2, Origin;
         affiliations with ICASE, NASA Langley, NCSA)

       - networking (Blacksburg Electronic Village, Internet
         Technology Innovation Center, world center for wireless
         communications)

       - artificial intelligence (active research in data mining)

The department encourages multidisciplinary research and has active research
programs in educational technologies, problem solving environments, and
digital libraries, among other areas. These programs will be enhanced by the
university's $26M Advanced Communications and Information Technology Center
(ACITC) opening in August 2000.
