IBM T.J. Watson Research Center
2002-2003 Herman Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowship in Mathematical Sciences

The Mathematical Sciences Department of IBM's Thomas J. Watson Research center invites applications, by 9 January 2002, for the 2002-2003 Herman Goldstine Postdoctoral Fellowhip.

Description: One fellowship, for one year's residency as a member of the IBM Research Mathematical Sciences Department; extensible to two years by mutual agreement. The department provides an atmosphere in which basic research is combined with work on technical problems arising in industry. Close interaction with permanent department members is expected, but fellows are free to pursue their own research interests.

The department does research in pure and applied mathematics and in theoretical and exploratory computer science. Areas of current research include: knowledge discovery, data mining, and machine learning; optimization (discrete, continuous, and stochastic, for applications including scheduling and supply-chain management); algorithms (approximation, randomized, and on-line); complexity (discrete and continuous); dynamical systems and differential equations; statistics; high-performance computation and numerical analysis; cryptography; coding theory; financial mathematics; and weather prediction.

The Research Center is located in Westchester County, less than an hour north of New York City.

For further information about the department and the fellowship, please see the URL below.

Eligibility: Candidates must have a doctorate and no more than five years of postdoctoral professional experience when the fellowship commences.

Grant amount: $85,000 to $95,000, plus an allowance for moving expenses.

Deadline: Applications must be received by January 9, 2002.

Application information: See www.research.ibm.com/math/goldstine or write to Herman Goldstine Fellowship Committee, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Room 32-248, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, P.O. Box 218, Yorktown Heights NY 10598, USA.
