Army investigates Jet Blue; Torch Concepts investigates terrorism

Wired News, Nov 26, "Army Quietly Opens JetBlue Probe", by Ryan Singel.

The Pentagon, which has remained tight-lipped for the past two months about its part in the JetBlue passenger data scandal, told an oversight committee last week that the Army Inspector General's office is looking into whether the Army violated the Privacy Act when it hired a contractor to use airline passenger records to study base security. ...

Thomas Killion, chief scientist and acting deputy assistant secretary of the Army for research and technology, told the panel that Torch Concepts approached the Army with the idea of scrutinizing airline passenger records in order to show how the contractor's technology could enhance Army base security "by identifying departures from normal operations using advanced pattern recognition technology"

Killion's presentation praised Torch's technology for discriminating between "normal" and abnormal passengers. A hypothetical test using Sept. 11 data resulted in "Terrorist ID=83 percent," according to the presentation.

Here is the rest of the story.
