POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for using and applying statistical techniques and analytical abilities on large data sets to develop independent sales force segmentations and predictive models that address customer relationship marketing and targeted marketing problems. The incumbent is also responsible for utilizing data mining techniques to provide Company management with a deeper understanding of the independent sales force behavior, product emphasis in promotions, and other Company programs directed to the independent sales force so that more informed decisions can be made by management in the future. In addition, the incumbent performs special data mining projects to better understand sales variances and other analyses as requested by management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Designs and develops the Company's U.S. data mining projects that provide Marketing management with additional information regarding the past behavior trends of the independent sales force by employing techniques utilizing standard data mining software. This information is used to determine the viability of new programs offered to independent sales consultants and estimate the behavior of certain segments of the independent sales force in light of historical individual consultant behaviors. Interfaces regularly with Marketing and Sales divisions to remain abreast of marketing and sales plans in order to respond adequately to their requests for data mining projects. Transforms informational needs into variables that may be quantified and presents the results in a concise functional format that is easily interpreted by non-financial personnel. Chooses data from appropriate sources such as the historical independent sales force and unit databases, discontinued product file information, and product sales trends. Coordinates with Information and Services Technology (IST) to determine that the data to be mined is in the proper format and definitions of variables are agreed. Develops predictive models utilized in various marketing or business scenarios by discovering and quantifying various factors and prepares reports reflecting the current or projected marketing and economic situation. Utilizes various multivariate statistical techniques and applications as needed to interpret the results of data mining and provide estimates of future behaviors. Designs and presents the results of all data mining projects in a concise report format that is easily interpreted by non-financial personnel.

2. Interprets and transforms the requests of management for data mining information into workable projects and assigns tasks to a Data Mining Analyst for research. Reviews all the work of the Data Mining Analyst, ensuring that all projects are organized in a logical format and properly documented. Oversees the development of data mining project presentations at the completion of data mining projects by the Data Mining Analyst to ensure the results are communicated in a concise format that is easily interpreted by non-financial personnel. Oversees the ongoing technical development of the Data Mining Analyst.

3. Assists with or develops cost/benefit analyses of special marketing and independent sales force promotional programs such as contests, seminars, automobile programs, etc., to estimate the probable impact of proposed programs and events on sales and the independent sales force via data mining. Prepares written reports of recommendations to be presented to Marketing, Sales and/or Executive management.

4. Performs special analysis projects as requested by management to aid in analyzing and improving Company programs and strategies. Coordinates with Information and Services Technology (IST) to design the source, content, and configuration of special reports. Must remain abreast of marketing and sales development strategy fluctuations and integrate those changes into data mining project designs.

5. Regularly reviews and analyzes monthly Company product line and independent sales force statistical reports to identify trends, historical relationships, ratios, time series, or other factors that may have caused historical sales trends and/or independent sales force behaviors. Utilizes this information for effective and efficient development of projects so as to glean new insights into independent sales force behavior through the use of data mining.

6. Collaborates regularly with Marketing Research to develop synergies with their research efforts in order to provide a more comprehensive understanding of independent sales force beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Incorporates this information into data mining projects developed so as to prevent duplication of efforts.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

1. Position requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent in economics, statistics, or operations research with a thorough understanding of multivariate statistical techniques. Must have a minimum of five to seven years of experience in data mining or statistical analysis function, preferably in a retail or direct selling environment. A post-graduate degree in statistics or operations research is preferred. Must possess a broad understanding of the global business environment, particularly that of the U.S.

2. Previous experience should include three years of direct use of at least one data mining and statistical analysis software package, such as SAS (Base SAS and Enterprise Miner) or SPSS (including Clementine) and work with relational databases such as Oracle, Sybase, or SQLServer. The applicant should also have performed exploratory statistical data analysis, sampling, model validation, data cleansing and estimation, preferably in areas leading to marketing campaigns that delivered significant business value.

3. Excellent communication and diplomacy skills are required to interact with management in non-financial areas, particularly Sales and Marketing. Must have experience in preparing reports of project findings to non-financial readers.
