Subject: Mountain View, CA: Data Mining Analyst at Google

As a Data Mining Analyst, you will provide critical analytical support to the Risk Management, Credit Management, and Payment Operations team at Google. This position will give the analyst valuable exposure to the world of Google including its business model, its customer focus, and its systems and operations. The core responsibilities of the Data Mining Analyst will be focused around protecting Google from various forms of risk and providing critical operational and management reporting. As such, you will be part of a talented team for designing, developing, and deploying state-of-the-art, data-driven predictive models to help Google manage payment risk using the latest technologies in neural networks, machine learning, statistical modeling, pattern recognition, segmentation techniques, and artificial intelligence.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Analyzing and understanding large amounts of Google’s historical business data for specific instances of risk or broader risk trends
  • Data pre-processing for analysis, including clean-up and filtering
  • Pattern identification, feature extraction, and feature (variable) selection
  • Experimenting with different types of algorithms and modeling techniques to control risk
  • Analyzing model performance
  • Overseeing implementation of new risk controls, assessing their results, and assisting in the fine-tuning as necessary
  • Preparing metrics and model reports for communication with business owners
  • Tracking general business activity and providing clear, compelling management reporting on a regular basis
  • Statistically evaluating and optimizing business rules and policies.
  • Collaborate with developers to identify and implement internal process improvements.
Required Qualifications (Experience/Skills)

  • MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Statistics/Math, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in pattern recognition, mathematical modeling, clustering/segmentation techniques, or data analysis. Preference is given to those with experience solving real-world business problems.
  • Familiarity with the latest modeling techniques and tools.
  • Very comfortable with UNIX, linux.
  • Experience in both traditional and scripting languages: C/C++, Java, Python, Perl, etc.
  • Understanding of database architecture for data mining. SQL experience in querying large volumes of data a plus.
  • Working knowledge of SAS, SPSS, SLStat or other analysis tools.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Excel and Powerpoint
  • Excellent ability to communicate complex concepts orally, in writing, and via presentations
  • Patience in learning new systems
  • Persistence to retrieve the data from all parts of the organization to perform daily tasks = Responsive, problem-solving, multi-tasking self-starter
  • Extreme attention to detail
  • Financial services, actuarial, or risk management experience a plus
