A junior research position is available at the Machine Learning Group, ULB, Universit� Libre de Bruxelles (www.ulb.ac.be/di/mlg), Belgium. This research project will focus on the development of statistical machine learning algorithms for facilitating knowledge discovery in medical data. The project is issued by a collaboration between the Machine Learning Group and a medical unity of the Erasme Hospital in Brussels.

The position is for two years (renewable once), starting on January 2006, and aims towards a PhD in Computer Science.

The work will use a variety of techniques in the statistical and computational sciences. Candidates should be well qualified (preferably Master) with a background in computer science, computational and applied statistics, computational intelligence or a related topic. Any experience in data modeling, data mining or statistical analysis would be an advantage.

Candidates should have good programming and communication skills, be able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team and fluent in English. The knowledge of French is an asset. Candidates not fluent in English should commit to reach an adequate level in a short period of time. The successful candidate will be required to spend a significant amount of time at Ersame hospital site working with doctors, so any demonstrated ability to work successfully in an interdisciplinary environment would be beneficial.

The Machine Learning Group is part of the ULB Computer Science Department. Its facility includes a cluster of 16 machines, individual top end work stations, a wireless sensor network and a Lego Robotics Lab.
