Subject: Sniglets and other Holiday Poetry

Sniglets are defined as "Words that don't appear in the dictionary, but should".
Sniglets are created by taking an existing word (or phrase) and modifying it by adding, deleting, or changing one letter, then supplying your new definition.

The previous KDnuggets News challenged the readers over the December holidays to create sniglets related to Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery.

Here are some selected submissions:

Geert Bilcke contributed

  • Knowledge biscovery : re-invention of something already invented, e.g. the wheel
  • Data waremouse : little animal that nibbles at the data, turning data quality into data squality
  • Machine earning : making your living by selling data mining tools
  • Alzminer : data miner who discovers information that was already forgotten
  • Bachpropagation : Neural Network learning algorithm inventing Fugues
Alfred Baeumler:
  • Data Moner - Analyst complaining about the bad quality of data

Grigorios Tsoumakas (Greece) sent this limerick (which I slighly edited by adding CHAID, which is a method for Chi-Square Automated Interaction Detection - Editor).

There once was a data miner,
who was training a decision tree classifier,
Of overfitting she was very afraid,
and post-pruned the tree using CHAID,
but the accuracy results didn't go higher.
