We would like to thank Marc Zimmer for his tireless efforts in attaining funds for the advancement of the sciences at Connecticut College and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the W. M. We would also like to thank thank Dr. Thomas Daggett, who helped through proof reading and comments on the content and Janet Hayes, who furnished the needed multimedia expertise and helped bring this project to completion.

We are most grateful to Prof. Ian Witten and Dr. Eibe Frank, U. of Waikato, New Zealand, for their generous permission to use many of their viewgraphs that came with their book, Data Mining: Practical Machine Learning Tools and Techniques with Java Implementations, which was the main textbook for the course.

We would also like to thank Dr. Weng-Keen Wong for permission to use some of his viewgraphs in Module 16 (section on WSARE).

Prof. Georges Grinstein has graciously permitted use of his viewgraph on census visualization as part of Visualization module. The English translation of the Minard map is used in Module 15 with the permission of Bob Abramms, ODT. Several slides in Visualization module are used with permission of Ben Bederson at UMD who adapted them from John Stasko at Georgia Tech.

Finally, we are grateful to Dr. Eric Bremer of Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, for permission to use his microarray data for part of the course.
