Subject: Rockville, MD: KDD Specialist at NASD Regulation

The Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining Group of the National Association of Securities Dealers Regulation, Inc. (NASD Regulation, Inc.) is seeking a KDD Specialist to join our team of experienced KDD staff in Rockville, MD, located outside of Washington, DC.

NASD Regulation is the subsidiary of the NASD, and is responsible for regulating the Nasdaq Stock Market, as well as all U.S. securities firms (i.e., brokers/dealers). We conduct analyses of financial market/member firm data resulting in knowledge which is used to implement detection patterns in our regulatory information systems and to make decisions regarding rules and policies for securities market regulation. We receive several types of transactions totaling over 30 million each day, all of which must be exhaustively and equitably surveilled for distinct instances of various complex potential violations and for identifying previously unknown and potential patterns/practices of behavior violating existing regulations. Our databases are several terabytes in size and growing rapidly. We apply leading technologies, methods, tools, and techniques to accomplish our goal of improving the effectiveness of our regulatory programs to continually enhance our position as the world's leading regulator of capital markets.

The KDD team works in close collaboration with both our Regulatory Analysts and our Information Systems Developers. The techniques we employ include exploratory data analysis, sequence detection, sequence discovery, rule matching, rule discovery, clustering, time series analyses, text mining, multiple regression, and visualization. We experiment with/define needed data requirements, transformations, clean-up, matching, and other data preparation operations. We also conduct special analyses of key regulatory issues, as well as continuously improve our KDD processes and procedures as appropriate for our highly dynamic environment.

You will have the opportunity to make an immediate and valuable contribution as we design and develop our next generation of regulatory systems. You will also have the opportunity to learn about various segments of the capital markets, including equities, options, derivatives, and fixed-income; and about all types of participants in the broker/dealer industry.

Candidates with various educational/professional backgrounds (including, but not limited to technical, financial, and business) will be considered. We require experience with both data analysis and programming, and strong communication skills with technical and non-technical colleagues. Interest in or previous experience with financial data is preferred. For the best fit, we are seeking candidates who are capable of independent contributions within a highly collaborative team. A strong background in test mining and NLP/rule-based expert systems, as well as experience with relational databases (especially Oracle) and SAS software are highly desirable. Eligibility to work in the U.S. is required.

We offer a competitive compensation and flexible benefits package. Interested candidates may contact Henry Goldberg at Henry.Goldberg@nasd.com or fax a resume to: (240) 386-5139. NASD Regulation is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer and is committed to diversity in our workforce. NASD is also a drug-free and smoke-free workplace.
