Subject: Postdoc and Senior research assistant at UTS - Sydney, Australia

University of Technology, Sydney Faculty of Information Technology

Two Research Positions

We have recently been awarded a 3-year grant from the Australian Research Council for our project: Shaping E-markets by Timely Information Discovery

This project will examine how e-markets evolve through entrepreneurial intervention. To achieve this goal we will design, implement, trial and deploy intelligent support systems for entrepreneurs working in business-to-business (B2B) and in business-to-consumer (B2C) e-business. These systems will take advantage of the information rich e-business environment. The entrepreneurial opportunity discovery process lies at the heart of market innovation and evolution, in which new knowledge is created by bringing together partial knowledge of different elements of a market.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow Ref No: R13302

As the Postdoctoral Research Fellow you will play a central role in drawing together the practical import of the inputs of the three Chief Investigators and identification of the requirements for entrepreneurial support in the e-markets environment. You will also be involved in the identification of the actor classes that will operate in the e-market place, and the development of the corresponding actor models that interact, negotiate and exchange information.

The whole experiment is flexible in that new components (actors) may be created and old ones may be combined or destroyed. This is the flexibility that is required to support entrepreneurial activity because such activity-intervention-changes the market and so changes the opportunities for new actors and so may change the scope of the opportunities for existing actors. You will assist in selecting and evaluating tools for building a prototype e-market system and for providing the support for the market evolutionary process. The e-market will be constructed based on the integration of three technologies - virtual worlds, data mining and intelligent agent technology.

A doctorate in a relevant branch of computing or artificial intelligence is desirable, as is the demonstrated ability in at least one of the areas of:

  • Data mining, information discovery methods
  • Text mining and information extraction
  • Intelligent software agent 'bot' technology for data and text mining
  • Multi-agent systems (particularly applied to process management)
  • Plausible inference (particularly inferences from heterogeneous knowledge sources)
  • Learning and adaptive technology
You must have personal skills adequate to work in a small team with both senior and junior colleagues, and written communication skills appropriate for producing reports, clearly documented code, user documentation, and formal papers for refereed publication.

Salary Range: $46,533-$56,521 pa. The University offers a wide-ranging salary packaging scheme to all staff plus attractive superannuation. This position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years.

Senior Research Assistant Ref No: R12302

As the Research Assistant you will build the process management support that manages all transaction in the e-market and for the entrepreneurial intervention. A powerful, distributed system is required in which plans will govern the management of processes with complex time, cost and value constraints. This system will operate in an unreliable environment and will need to intelligently make contingency plans when things start to go wrong.

A first degree in a relevant branch of computing is essential, as is some knowledge of the relevant artificial intelligence technologies. Experience in system development is desirable.

Salary Range: $42,397- $45,905pa. The University offers a wide-ranging salary packaging scheme to all staff plus attractive superannuation. This position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years.

Application procedure: Obtain the selection criteria from the UTS website: www.uts.edu.au/div/hru/employ OR phone 02 9514 1087. If you then require further information, please contact Dr Simeon Simoff on 02 9514 1103 or at simeon@it.uts.edu.au

Applications should be received by 19 April 2002, include details of three referees, quote the appropriate Reference Number and be addressed to recruitment@uts.edu.au or:

The Recruitment Officer University of Technology, Sydney PO Box 123, Broadway, NSW 2007

Interviews will be conducted at the end of April 2002.
