Subject: Data Mining and Humor

In response to last KDnuggets News request, I got a few good jokes about data miners -- here they are.

Q- Why did the robust data miner not cross the road? A- She thought it was a standard deviation. (thanks to Kevin Pratt)

--- Imagine as a Bumber Sticker:

Old Statisticians Never Die. They Just Get Broken Down By Age And Sex.

thanks to Marcus Brownlow

-- From Robert Tibshirani Collection:

Top ten reasons why statisticians are really not boring:

10. At parties they can recite highlights of the 1990 U.S. census

  • Accountants find them exciting
  • They travel in spaceships to the moon! (oops, that's why astronauts are exciting)
  • Al Gore thinks they're a wild and crazy bunch.
  • For excitement they watch reruns of the Simpson trial DNA testimony
  • They wear calculators that match the color of their ties
  • They have more members of the knitting hall of fame than any other profession
  • They use exciting pickup lines like ''Wanna come back to my place and see my bootstrap collection?''
  • They can appreciate a nice posterior and GAMs
    1. On the average they're a mean bunch!

Dilbert had a series of several moderately funny cartoons relating adventures of Adventures of Dogbert, the data miner. Thanks to Charlie Kufs for reminding me about these cartoons. Unfortunately, I don't have the rights to republish them, and they are not funny without the images.

-- The remaining jokes -- in the next issue.
