April 25, 2002. Sankt Augustin, Germany. Fraunhofer Institute for Autonomous Intelligent Systems announces the launch of the Website for KDNet, the international project in the field of Knowledge Discovery. KDNet is an EU-funded project enabling the establishment of an active European Knowledge Discovery Community.

Knowledge Discovery or Data Mining is concerned with the methods and technologies, which automatically recognize connections and patterns within large volume of data, in order to offer the user "novel and useful knowledge". These systems enjoy a great popularity by being frequently used by in the banking and insurance sector, telecommunications, meteorology, in department stores, as well as in medicine and biotechnology.

The Knowledge Discovery Network of Excellence (KDNet) is an open network. Any interested European research or commercial organization can apply to become a member of this Community. KDNet members can benefit from the comprehensive Online Information System (www.kdnet.org) with sample applications, training materials for data analysis, technical reports, vendor guides, news & events calendar, thematical links, etc. Interest groups meetings and practical events are regularly on the agenda.

Participant companies into KDNet can profit from case studies, company profiles, vendors guides, as well as from contacts to research institutes, the public sector institutions, and other companies active in different knowledge discovery sectors.

Together with PharmaDM, a bioinformatics company from Belgium and the university of Leuven, the KDNet will sponsor and organize the Bio Informatics workshop in the frame work of the 14th Belgian-Dutch Conference on Artificial Intelligence (BNAIC 2002, Leuven). The workshop will take place in October the 23th 2002, in Leuven (Begijnhof) Belgium . The focus lies on identifying and anticipating new emerging technologies and trends in knowledge discovery and on transferring this knowledge to the bio/pharmaceutical industry and bench scientists in general.
