Industries/fields where you currently apply data mining:

Based on 131 voters and 279 votes, the results are:

  • Banking, 13%
  • Bioinformatics/Biotech, 10%
  • Direct Marketing/Fundraising, 10%
  • eCommerce/Web, 5%
  • Entertainment/News, 1%
  • Fraud Detection, 9%
  • Insurance, 8%
  • Investment/Stocks, 3%
  • Manufacturing, 2%
  • Medical/Pharma, 6%
  • Retail, 6%
  • Scientific data, 9%
  • Security, 2%
  • Supply Chain Analysis, 1%
  • Telecommunications, 8%
  • Travel, 2%
  • Other, 4%
  • None, 1%
Compared to a similar poll in 2002, the most significant difference is that only 279 votes were recorded, about 45% of 608 votes recorded in 2002 votes (the decline is probably partly due to the computer virus epidemics during the poll period).

The industries with largest increases in reported data mining applications were:

  • Biology/Genetics/Proteomics, up from 5% to 10%,
  • Direct Marketing/Fundraising, up from 7% to 10%
  • Insurance, up from 6% to 8%
The industries with largest declines were:

  • eCommerce/Web, down from 9% to 5%
  • Supply Chain Analysis, down from 3% to 1%
  • Manufacturing, down from 5% to 2%
  • Entertainment, down from 2% to 1%
