Job Description:

The Amazon.com Associates program seeks a highly qualified Director/Senior Manager of Software Development to lead an integrated business and technical team to drive innovation and operational excellence in the core Associates Platform. With its network of over one million affiliates, the Associates Program is a leader in online marketing, providing double-digit contribution to traffic and revenue at Amazon properties across the globe. This position is responsible for continually improving the quality of foundational tools, services, and operational processes to increase customer satisfaction and loyalty. Functional ownership includes the user experience, reporting and payment services, customer service, fraud detection and enforcement, legal and financial risk management, software development process and standards, service level performance, and operational cost reduction. Team composition includes software development, web development, business managers, technical product/program managers, and operational staff.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, independent, highly technical, hands-on manager with a proven track record of architecting and implementing large-scale software services, managing customer-facing operational functions, and leading integrated technical and business teams. Candidates must demonstrate experienced leadership of the software development life cycle, from product conception through delivery, and the ability to meet aggressive schedules. Technical expertise in high performance transactional systems, relational databases in a Linux/C++/Oracle environment, distributed networks, OO language and design, performance tuning/scaling, and quality assurance techniques is required. Familiarity with Java/JSP, JavaScript, Perl, Mason, CSS, XSLT, HTML and other Web technologies is extremely helpful.

In addition to technical aptitude, the ideal candidate will be highly analytical and detail-oriented, demonstrate strong business judgment, communicate effectively, be intellectually curious, and remain calm in the face of fast-moving, hectic environments. Experience making investment tradeoff decisions, designing and implementing effective policies, setting and meeting standards for operational performance, and figuring out how to "delight customers" consistently is also required. 10+ years of work experience and BSc in Computer Science required; MS in Computer Science and MBA are preferred. Passion for excellence a must.

Qualifications:

• A hands-on manager, willing to get into the technical details and learn our code, be proactive in removing roadblocks. Prefer hands-on to someone with twenty years of high level technical management experience
• Able to provide experienced leadership for the software development process. Candidate should have strong opinions about how to manage a high performance technical team and deliver quality software outputs with maximum efficiency and fit to business requirements.
• Able to contribute to strategic decisions about the organization, investment tradeoffs, and solutions to business issues at the management team level. Must have good business sense and know what the right drivers are
• Someone with operational experience - not only managing teams but managing business functions in addition to software development. Someone who can direct strategic planning, understand business tradeoffs, and intuit the most important drivers for his/her part of the business
• A good cultural fit for amazon and the team: positive attitude, bias for action, able to handle stress of fast-paced environment, multi-task, and PROACTIVE
