Allstate Research and Planning Center located in Menlo Park, CA (part of Allstate Insurance Company), has a great opportunity for a Research Associate to work with a multidisciplinary group of Research professionals conducting research on all major facets of the insurance business. Allstate Insurance Company is the largest publicly traded Property & Casualty Insurance Company in the United States. The work of our Research Center helps the company evaluate various business programs and make decisions about future company direction.

Qualified individual will design and conduct data mining and statistical analysis. They will use internal and external data to provide actionable insights and predictive models for insurance processes. They will explore the use of new data sources, research methods and modeling methods to expand the research knowledge of the company.

Responsibilities:

  • Data preparation in order to identify the most relevant variables and determine the complexity and/or the general nature of models
  • Identify and investigate new research methods and data sources
  • Create and validate predictive models
  • Communicate project progress to colleagues and management
  • Work within teams to integrate findings and models into company operations
Qualifications:
  • Masters in Operations Research, Applied Math, Computational Sciences, Statistics, Data Mining or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years work related experience
  • Insurance industry experience a plus
  • Demonstrated capability in analyzing data and integrating such analysis into general conclusions to solve business problems or to support company strategies
  • Extensive practical experience with exploratory data analysis, multivariate regression, data visualization, clustering or other data mining techniques such as decision trees on large-scale datasets
  • Extensive practical experience with variable selection and feature extraction
  • Strong writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to think broadly and creatively
  • Ability to learn quickly and to apply new tools and techniques
  • Strong listening and communications skills - highly collaborative work style yet must demonstrate ability to work independently
  • Proficiency in programming and data management in a UNIX and/or mainframe environment beneficial; SAS SQL preferred
  • Proficiency in a scripting language e.g. Perl or Python
  • Proficiency in MATLAB, S-plus/R, or SAS preferred
