Subject: KDD Cup 2006 results

And the winner is...

This year's KDD Cup competition was a difficult contest involving data mining for medical diagnosis. The problems were particularly challenging because they were characterized by a number of unusual and strenuous conditions:

  • small training and test data
  • highly nonlinear evaluation criteria
  • multiple instance learning
In all, 68 teams completed the competition, representing at least eighteen countries. Over one third of the competitors were students or student-led teams. The competition was very tough, with a number of extremely strong solutions submitted. I would like to congratulate everybody who competed. It's clear that all the teams put in a great amount of effort and creativity.

The competition consisted of three tasks, each of which is scored separately. In addition, we identified the strongest student submission in each category. The winners of the 2006 KDD Cup competition are:

Task 1:
Winner: Chris Volinsky -- AT&T Research
Runners-up:

  • Zsolt Kardkovacs (Budapest University of Technology)
  • Best student entry: Karthik Kumara (Indian Institute of Science)
