If you have a background in a computer science based subject, preferably with a PhD, publications and/or industrial track record in the field, you could be pushing groundbreaking research into the real world.

The Mathematical & Psychological Sciences group at our Colworth Corporate Research Centre advances scientific work in areas where mathematics, computer science and psychology overlap. It is a team peopled with experts from many disciplines, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, and driven by a genuine commitment to innovation. As well as being a hotbed of scientific activity, this is a genuinely exciting place to work - it's a new area, and a new approach, and you will have the freedom to invest time in scientific discovery.

Main Job Purpose:
As part of this team you will conduct research in to algorithm performance engineering ambient intelligence or distributed autonomous systems, with particular reference to building a new generation of mass-scale vitality and consumer services. Your work will be able to show how this area of science can be applied further within Unilever. You'll set up collaborative research with key academics, identify potential for fundamental patents, turn theoretical advances into systems, algorithms or new methods to solve problems, and use demonstrators, pilots and case studies to demonstrate the potential of your research.

There are many exciting projects ahead. We've recently been involved in the i-Shakti Project

  • an e-platform of adaptive, personalised services for the Indian rural consumer providing targeted marketing and accessible information on agriculture, education, beauty, health and hygiene.
We have spun out a new start-up business called MiLife (www.milife.com), that specialises in on-line behaviour change programmes for weight management - we all know that we should exercise more, eat less and more healthily, and the MiLife system helps us achieve these goals through personalised advice and real-time feedback on activity levels.

Skills / Experience:
You'll be inventive, innovative, creative and self-motivated. You'll have the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team and communicate efficiently with those not in the discipline. You will be able to turn theory into practice. You should come with a track record of relevant publications or industrial experience, and preferably a higher degree in the field.
