Subject: Golden, CO: 42BR-Postdoctoral Researcher, Metabolic Pathway Models at NREL

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), www.nrel.gov, located at the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

NREL's Scientific Computing Group has an immediate opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) Postdoctoral Researcher to construct physically motivated metabolic pathway models, with an initial emphasis on metabolism related to light harvesting and H2 production in green algae. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal for up to three years.

The successful candidate will perform independent and team research on genome-scale biochemical transformations, including network inference from genomics data, literature mining for enzyme kinetic formulation, incorporation of system-wide thermodynamic constraints, and analysis of simulations. Models will be constructed in modular fashion with the Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML) for simulations using in-house software under development for high-performance computational resources (petascale architectures and grids). The candidate will maintain active collaborations with experimental researchers to incorporate microarray, proteomics, and metabolomics data as well as with applied mathematicians and computer scientists. Research progress will be reported through written reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at in-house seminars and international meetings. Assistance with grant proposal development involving related research is also expected.

Qualifications

  • Must be a recent Ph.D. graduate with in the last three year.
  • Ph.D. in computational biology, biochemistry, or allied fields.
  • Experience with model encoding in SBML or other XML-based languages, and working within Linux shell environments.
  • Must be familiar with the organic chemistry and thermodynamics of biochemical transformations.
  • Familiarity with oxygenic photosynthesis and bioenergetics, high- performance computation, and grid technologies such as Globus.
