Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), www.nrel.gov, located in Golden, Colorado, is the nation's primary laboratory for research, development and technology transfer of renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

NREL's Materials and Computational Sciences Center has an opening for a full-time postdoctoral researcher in computational systems biology. The initial appointment is for one year, with possible renewal for up to three years. The postdoctoral researcher will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to create high-performance computational tools to simulate cellular metabolism on upcoming enterprise-class petascale machines. Initial project focus will be on metabolism surrounding H2 production in a green algal cell.

The work will include interfacing with high-throughput experimental -omics work and incorporating results into SBML models using enzymologically inspired rate equations; parameter identification and optimization in these models; adapting and/or programming differential equation solvers for maximum performance on multi-core chip architectures; and, working with other programmers on analytics and GUI integration. The candidate will be responsible for software design and testing, as well as scientific writing and presentations. Significant use of local terascale computing resources at NREL is expected.

Qualifications
Must be a recent Ph.D. graduate with in the last three years.

REQUIRED:

• Experience in computational biology and high-performance computing, or closely allied areas.
• Some proficiency in the development of parallelized software, and programming experience with C/C++, MPI, and threading.
• Excellent written and oral presentation skills.

• Experience with SBML and computational systems biology tools.
• Familiarity with high-throughput experimental biology (transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, regulomics).
• Experience working on collaborative projects with diverse backgrounds across experimental, computational, and theoretical sciences.
• Familiarity with Java and Python.
• A keen interest in biologically based renewable energy technologies.
