Subject: Needed: Brief Data Mining Examples & Case Studies

More detail is below, but in brief I need 2-page data mining highlights: a meaningful graphic and some background material that summarizes key challenges, solution elements, impact, data characteristics, etc. These highlights could be industrial applications or research results tied to real-world problems. All attribution to you will be maintained on these examples. The brief we are building will be used for MITRE and our government sponsors. I also plan to release the material back to the KDD community for your reuse.

Additional detail is below. I hope you will take a few minutes to help this project. If you choose to respond, I will need materials by Monday, 23 February.

Thank you,

Neal

Further Detail:

I am preparing a data mining overview for organizational leaders and decision makers. A primary goal of this half-day brief is to provide a broad flavor of the types of domains, challenges, and solutions that exist across the data mining field. We are deliberately not focused on algorithms or technical detail. We want our audience to come away with an appreciation for the broad range of domains, problems, data types, and solution and output formats. Towards these ends, we have decided to focus on case studies, examples and highlights.

Our initial audience is MITRE program managers and organizational leaders, followed by an evolution for government decision makers. MITRE is a not-for-profit, federally funded research and development corporation (FFRDC) that provides objective advice to the US government (http://www.mitre.org). Our government sponsors frequently ask for overviews on the basic capabilities, accomplishments, and the latest developments in the field (I’m sure many of you fulfill the same request). We try to provide as broad and unbiased a view as possible. I am not receiving additional compensation or payment for my contribution to, or presentation of, this material.

Assuming I get sufficient material to generate a good briefing, I will happily release both the raw material and my finished briefing to the wider KDD community (aside from any material for which I am explicitly asked or otherwise forbidden from releasing). You will be welcome to reuse the material in whole or in part as you need it (maintaining the original attributions).

What I need from you:
We are envisioning a portion of the presentation as 1-2 slide highlights of data mining applications (both "real world" deployments as well as research results tied to real-world problems), and this is where Id like you to contribute. Each highlight will have two components: A graphic, and a high-level characterization. A critical component of each highlight will be some type of graphic. This could be a an overview graphic, or a data example (e.g., sample images), an illustrative UI/output screenshot, or something that demonstrates the challenge of the problem or the results. In addition, wed like to be able to present some high level characteristics of the problem and solution (key challenges, novel aspects of the solution, size/breadth of the data, impact, interaction with domain experts, etc.). If there is a supporting paper or even informal description of the work (so that we might be able to answer some high-level questions during the presentation), that would add to the value of the material. We are not trying to represent or communicate the details of your work. That is beyond the scope of our effort, and we would refer those types of questions to you. OF COURSE, WE WILL MAINTAIN ATTRIBUTION OF THE WORK TO YOU AND YOUR ORGANIZATION. All examples and highlights that are presented will be clearly labeled with their origin.

In addition to helping me, I hope you will consider this an opportunity for our community to generate a broad overview of the types of impact we can have. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

If you choose to respond, I will need materials by Monday, 23 February.
