Researchers work on website credibility tests

Apr 21, 2009 MADRID (AFP) - With the explosion in the number of Web sites offering political viewpoints, health advice and other information, researchers are working on tools that can quickly determine if a Web site is credible.

The need for this has increased due to the growth of user-generated content like blogs, said Andreas Juffinger, a researcher at the Know-Center, a technology research centre in Austria.

He is part of a team that is developing a programme that analyses blogs and automatically ranks them as either "highly credible", "average credible" or "little credible".

It does this by comparing statistical properties, such as the distribution of certain words over time, of a blog entry with those of news articles on the same topic from mainstream sources that have already been deemed to be credible.
