Tilmann Bruckhaus, Machine Learning by Tom M. Mitchell
Covers decision trees, neural networks, hypotheses, bayesian learning, expectancy maximization, text classification, computational learning theory, k-nearest neighbors, locally weighted regression, genetic algorithms, analytical learning, and reinforcement learning. Style is narrative with some mathematical notation, pseudo code and illustrations.

Yannis Theodoridis, Dunham, Data Mining textbook
Very good, comprehensive book on introductory and advanced DM topics. Also, translated in Greek (for those interested...)

Daniel Larose of CCSU has an introductory data mining textbook that combines clarity with good exercises. The only problem is the publisher forgot to mention the website for it (http://www.dataminingconsultant.com/). Data files can be downloaded from there.

The book by Berthold and Hand "Intelligent Data Analysis - An Introduction" should also be on this list.

Randy Collica, Other good data mining books I might suggest other books in data mining which are very good indeed: Business Modeling & Data Mining by D. Pyle, 2002. Data Mining Techniques by G. Linoff and M. Berry 2nd ed, and Pattern Classification 2nd ed. by Duda, Hart, and Stork, 2001.
