The awards recognize outstanding research in the field of data mining and knowledge discovery. The 2010 winner is Dr. Mohammad Al Hasan with dissertation "Mining Interesting Subgraphs by Output Space Sampling" (advisor: Mohammed Zaki, RPI). Committee also selected a runner-up and additional finalists.

Date:

July 15, 2010. This year's upcoming SIGKDD International Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (KDD 2010), to be held in Washington, DC, will highlight the third annual ACM SIGKDD Doctoral Dissertation Award presentations. The award seeks to recognize outstanding research by doctoral candidates in the field of data mining and knowledge discovery. Since its inception in 2008, the interest in the award program has increased dramatically resulting in a number of very high quality nominations from prominent universities and institutions across the world.

The SIGKDD Dissertation Award Committee is pleased to announce Dr. Mohammad Al Hasan dissertation titled "Mining Interesting Subgraphs by Output Space Sampling" (advisor: Mohammed Zaki, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) as the winner of the 2010 award. Dr. Hasan's dissertation presents an innovative and general approach to frequent pattern mining with a potential to dramatically improve the performance of currently available tools. His dissertation was selected from among a number of very strong candidates and receiving this award serves as a clear recognition of its contributions to the KDD community.

SIGKDD will also recognize the runner up dissertation by Dr. Jilles Vreeken, titled "Making Pattern Mining Useful" (advisor: Arno Siebes, Utrecht University). Both the winner and the runner up will be recognized at the KDD conference with plaques and will have the opportunity to present a summary of their dissertations during the conference. As the overall winner, Dr. Hasan will also receive $2,500 honorarium from SIGKDD.

This year, the Dissertation Award Committee has also chosen to recognize two additional finalists from among the candidates because of the excellent contributions made by their dissertations. These finalists are Dr. Qiaozhu Mei (Dissertation: "Contextual Text Mining"; Advisor: Cheng Xiang Zhai, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign) and Dr. Pauli Miettinen (Dissertation: "Matrix Decomposition Methods for Data Mining: Computational Complexity and Algorithms"; Advisor: Heikki Mannila, University of Helsinki). These finalists will also be recognized at the opening ceremonies and will receive a certificate of recognition.
