Subject: How Big is the Web?

A new paper The Indexable Web is more than 11.5 billion pages, estimate the web size as of January 2005.

The paper, by Antonio Gulli of Universit� di Pisa (who is also director of advanced products for Ask Jeeves) and Alessio Signorini (also of the University of Iowa), gives also the percentage of the Web covered by each major search engine:

  • Google: 76.16%
  • Yahoo!: 69.32%
  • Msn Beta: 61.90%
  • Ask/Teoma: 57.62%
The method for estimating the indexable portion of the World Wide Web is based on generating a large number of random queries and measuring the overlaps between the search results.
