So, let's have a look how the data economy looks like in early 2012. Who are the players and what are their business models? What areas are they covering and what are the services they provide around the product data? What metadata is available for searching and filtering datasets?
As input I will use Marin Dimitrov's slide-set on data marketplaces, everything I was able to find on Twitter under datamarket, Stefano Bertolo's bookmarks collection on delicious as well as the question Is there a GitHub for data? on Quora. Further I found Paul Miller's podcasts on data markets and data marketplaces over at his blog 'The Cloud of Data' very useful and inspirational.
Players. I was able to identify the following data market players as of Feb 2012 (in alphabetical order):
- Azure Marketplace by Microsoft
- BuzzData
- datacatalogs.org
- DataCouch
- DataMarket
- Factual
- figshare
- Freebase by Google
- Infochimps
- Junar
- Kasabi
- qunb
- Socrata
- Timetric
- xIgnite

Are there more data marketplaces that should be added?
