Analytics and Big Data companies among WSJ list of top US venture-backed companies.


WSJ published a ranking of the top 50 U.S. companies backed by venture capital-a list that attempts to identify start-ups that could become the "Next Big Thing."

To be eligible for the ranking companies must be based in the US, have received an equity round of financing in the past three years and be valued at less than $1 billion, as the aim was to identify lesser-known start-ups (excluding such high-profile companies like Twitter, Dropbox, and Pinterest).

This list includes several companies in Analytics, Big Data Space:

#9. 10gen, company Behind MongoDB, the scalable NoSQL database. New York, NY, Founded in 2007

#16. UberMedia. Twitter bid-based marketplace Its suite of social-media applications are used by more than 30 million people. Pasadena, CA, Founded in 2010

#40 Tidemark Systems, Cloud-based business analytics applications. Redwood City, CA, founded in 2010.

#42 Couchbase, NoSQL technology to power interactive Web apps. Customers include AOL, Salesforce.com and Orbitz. Mountain View, CA, founded in 2009.

#47 ThreatMetrix, Real-time fraud-detection software platform. Acquired TrustDefender, the malware detection firm, late last year. San Jose, CA, founded in 2005.
