Job Description:
The Research Department at Insightful Corporation, www.insightful.com, is devoted to the research, development, and application of cutting-edge statistical methodologies for data analysis and predictive analytics. We are seeking a research scientist/statistican to lead externally funded research projects (sbir/sttr or other funding mechanisms); develop state of the art statistics in R or S-Plus; collaborate with academics; publish user manuals, papers, and books; lend expertise to consulting projects; and conduct training and/or webinars based on research results.

COMPETENCIES:

• Statistician experienced in machine learning, classification, and pattern recognition including understanding of theory, development, and application of techniques such as random forests, bagging, boosting, support vector machines, neural networks, K nearest neighbors, and linear and quadratic discriminant analysis.
• Also desirable is knowledge about classifier combinations, such as stacked generalization; feature selection/dimensionality reduction, such as filter and wrapper methods; unsupervised machine learning/clustering; bioinformatics applications such as genomics microarray, proteomics/mass spectrometry.
• In research, the statistician should show valuable experience through the relevance of their publications. Prefer experience in grant writing, demonstrating potential to be a principal investigator or team lead.
• Must be proficient in the development of software for statistical data analysis. Requires strong programming skills in C/C++/Java, R/S-PLUS, or Matlab, and experience in building software packages on Windows, Linux, UNIX.
• Experience consulting with non-statisticians, e.g., engineers, managers, research clinicians, biologists.
• Strong technical writing skills.
• Great enthusiasm, excellent communication skills.
