Subject: Seattle Metropolitan area, WA: Database Engineer at MSN

MSN Global Service Operations team is looking for a self-driven, passionate and experienced Database Engineer to support two of the largest SQL Server based applications on the planet. This team is responsible for planning, deploying, running and optimizing two highly complex applications that each consist of thousands of machines.

Responsibilities:
This job includes a combination of industry-typical database engineering responsibilities and close partnership with product teams on automation, manageability, security, optimization and deployment of enterprise applications. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Technical engineering support - Support for the implementation, integration, and evolution of complex systems.
  • Optimize and innovate - Develop database performance monitoring, tuning and optimization tactics and build database management automation and tooling capabilities. Push such innovation and optimization back in to the product.
  • Deploy features and capacity expansion - Manage and execute deployments of applications in production and pre-production environments
  • Incident resolution - Timely resolution of critical production systems issues using technical and problem solving expertise.
  • Analyze system trending - Provide systems statistical trending and analysis expertise including trending in system capacity and threshold testing and monitoring, performance characteristics, incidents (errors), and problems.
  • Evaluate systems and technology - Assess new systems designs and technical strategies
  • Systems documentation - Create and maintain systems documentation.
Requirements:
This position requires a candidate that is detail and results oriented with a good balance of passion for technology, solid problem solving skills and eagerness to accept ownership and accountability. Expected areas of expertise include:

  • Strong knowledge of database related technologies, SQL 2000, SQL 2005 with concentration in performance tuning, live-site management, business continuity concepts, failover technologies, and replication.
  • Systems monitoring experience
  • A minimum of 10 years of demonstrated work experience in related field
  • Programming Language: Prefer experience in one of following: C, VB, C#, Java or Perl and TSQL
  • Solid problem analysis skills
  • Detail oriented and able to multi-task on several projects at once
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Bachelor degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience is required
  • Participation in a 24 X 7 on-call rotation
