CIDU Conference on Intelligent Data Understanding Spotlights Data Mining Research in Science and Engineering

By Greg Orzech

2010's Conference on Intelligent Data Understanding (CIDU) is a unique chance for researchers, practitioners, and students alike to present their work, or to simply catch up with recent data mining research in the fields of science and engineering. CIDU 2010 will feature presentations on the applications of data mining from top researchers, practitioners, and students in the fields of Earth and Space Sciences and Systems Health Applications. NASA sponsors this conference, which will take place on October 5th-7th, 2010, in the San Francisco Bay Area.

CIDU 2010 will be free, with no registration fees.

The conference proceedings will be published as a special NASA technical publication, which is a government-mandated archival source. Additionally, selected papers from both experts and students will be published in the journal of Statistical Analysis and Data Mining. Awards will also be handed out for the best overall paper and the best student paper.

Even if you are not presenting, CIDU is a great way to follow recent data mining research in these and other fields. This year's conference debuts what CIDU calls their "best of the best" sessions, where the most popular speakers from other leading data mining conferences will be presenting their work. So if you missed out on any of the other conferences this year, you'll be able to catch the highlights from those conferences here. As a single-track conference, CIDU is also able to slot longer talk and discussion times for presentations than most conferences, which makes the presentations more relaxed and allows the discussions and question-and-answer sessions to dig a little deeper.

For those submitting papers, CIDU papers should focus on the applications of data mining in the fields of science and/or engineering. Papers will be reviewed based on their technical and scientific merit, significance, originality, relevance, and clarity. Papers submitted to CIDU 2010 should be original work and not previously published in a peer-reviewed conference or journal (an exception will be made for compelling position papers based on prior published work that present a grand challenge problem for the synergy between an application and data mining). Papers that include a clear link between the application area and machine learning and data mining are particularly encouraged.

CIDU also has a very active poster session, which is a great opportunity for researchers from anywhere in the world to present their work. Student and industry participation is particularly encouraged. Poster presenters need to submit a two-page extended abstract highlighting new and interesting results, ideas, and/or works-in-progress.

Core topics for both papers and posters include (but are not limited to) the earth and space sciences, systems health applications, and general data mining and machine learning topics. The General Chair for CIDU'10 is Dr. Ashok Srivastava from NASA AMES; the program chairs are Dr. Nitesh Chawla from University of Notre Dame and Dr. Philip Yu from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Please see the CIDU website for a more complete list of topics and requirements, organization committee, and key deadlines:
