World Cup 2010The favorite teams are continuously determined during the World Cup with RapidMiner and RapidAnalytics, the server behind RapidMiner. The website
www.mannschaft-der-herzen.de then shows the tops and flops on the sympathy curve.

Rapid-I, a leading provider of open source solutions for predictive analytics, data mining and text mining, is observing the online sentiment during the World Cup with its award-winning data mining solutions. Texts from more than 1000 online channels have been collected and analyzed already since mid of May. Positive, negative and neutral attitudes towards the individual World Cup teams expressed in diverse blogs, forums and on other online channels are automatically filtered out by the tools. The results can be followed on the Internet with a curve reflecting the sentiment over time, taking special outlier events into consideration. In this way all football fans can find out the current level of sympathy for individual teams and also witness changes in sentiment live. So the "team of hearts" will be determined at the end of the world championship, irrespectively of who wins the sporting competition. You can watch the latest results, which are updated once per hour, at

In the following screenshot you can see how the injury of Michael Ballack increases the amount of negative comments a lot during mid of May (the beginning of the trend curve). During the last week, especially after German first match against Australia, the sentiment turned into positive.

The website also shows the topics which are discussed by journalists and fans. For the English team, the injury ("Verletzung") of its captain Ferdinand was clearly an important negative topic which can easily be seen in the following screenshot:

From the overall sentiment results, Rapid-I also calculated the chance for winning the World Cup for the different teams by comparing the rate of positive sentiments to all other teams. In the following, you see a screenshot which was taken before the World Cup has started: It can easily be seen that Spain was expected to win the World Cup by many people.
