Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) is looking for a research associate in applied information technology, with a strong background in environmental science or a related discipline (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, etc.). HARC, a private, not-for-profit applied scientific research facility dedicated to sustainable development, is located in The Woodlands, Texas, 30 miles north of Houston. Education:
M.S. in Computer Science, B.S. in Environmental Science, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Computer Science, or related discipline.
Experience:
Minimum of 1 year experience in a relevant research project, prior to, during, or after acquisition of masters degree.
Skills:
Proven experience in the following:
- REQUIRED: strong programming skills (e.g., PHP, ASP.NET, C# 2.0 or similar, Ajax, Javascript, Google Maps API, FORTRAN); databases (e.g., MS SQL Server 2005, MySQL); SQL Server Analysis Server; data mining; OLAP/data warehousing
- DESIRED: knowledge and experience in analysis of environmental information, preferably in the air quality arena; familiarity with geographic information systems
Additional qualifications/information:
Must be eligible to work in the United States; strong oral and written communication skills in English required; ability to write design specifications and user documentation; detail oriented.
Duration:
one year with the possibility of reappointment if funding becomes available.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Contribute to internal air quality research projects, including analysis of field study data, and interface with atmospheric and/or human exposure models and epidemiological surveillance systems; design and implement a dynamic database backed website utilizing Google Maps API; database programming and geospatial analysis using web interfacing; application of data mining and data warehousing tools; interfaces to and/or development of applications, models and tools; and software documentation.
