The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (JHU/APL) , a national leader in scientific research and development, located midway between Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC is seeking a Data Mining Scientist with interest and experience in knowledge discovery, machine learning and pattern recognition.

The selected candidate will develop state-of-the-art algorithms with prototype implementation to respond to critical national security tasks in many of the following areas :

  • Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery with special emphasis on rule extraction and pruning;
  • Machine Learning;
  • Pattern Recognition;
  • Anomaly and novelty detection;
  • Inexact Matching Techniques and Analysis of Incomplete Data and Partial Information;
  • Data -driven predictive model development;
  • Concept Discovery in Free-Text, Chats, Blogs, Unstructured Reports, etc. ;
  • and Evidential Reasoning, Statistical Analysis and Fuzzy Logic.
The algorithms will operate on very large data sets collected under challenging operational environments to "Connect-the Dots" and provide robust situation assessment/awareness and predictive capabilities of potential future threats. The selected Data Mining Scientist will use existing data mining algorithms or design new ones to extract nuggets of information of interest. This is an opportunity to work with a group of dedicated professionals from a variety of technical backgrounds and to publish research findings in peer-reviewed literature.

The successful candidate must be a highly-motivated, team-oriented, self-starter desiring to be challenged by working on problems of national importance and must have the ability and interest to work across internal and external organizations. A MA or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics or Statistics with emphasis on Computer Science and Optimization is required (A Ph.D. in the same fields is desired). Applicants should have a proven track record in designing and developing data mining algorithms for solving interdisciplinary problems. He/she must have experience dealing with real-world large data sets and must be fluent with hands-on experience with Matlab, JAVA, C++/C, etc. The candidate must also be able to communicate results effectively, in both written and oral form with strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to work on dynamic projects to react to changing national security requirements and the ability to handle and set priorities for multiple projects is expected.

Selected applicants will be subject to a Government security investigation and must meet the eligibility requirements (including required U.S. citizenship) for security clearance.
