Postdoctoral fellowship: Knowledge Acquisition for Automated Natural Language Understanding

Automated natural language understanding relies on common and world knowledge for a correct interpretation by the machine. The machine should be able to read between the lines of a text as much of the content needed for understanding is left implicit. Acquiring this knowledge automatically and combining this knowledge with content expressed in a natural language discourse remain challenging but important research questions.

A postdoctoral research position is available in the frame of the MUSE EU project (granted under the FP7 Future and Emerging Technologies call). The position will be funded by a F+ fellowship grant of the KU Leuven university, Belgium. The research will be performed at the Department of Computer Science of this university. In the MUSE project the postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with distinguished European research partners. The fellowship will start in the Spring or Summer of 2014. It is granted for 1 year with the possibility of extension for 1 year.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated and has an interest and expertise in knowledge mining from text and other sources, (uncertainty) reasoning and/or natural language processing. He or she has obtained the PhD no longer than 6 years ago. He or she has a good mathematical background, strong programming skills, and is proficient in written and spoken communication. He or she is eager to work in a team and can show records of excellent academic and/or professional achievements. The candidate will be part of a dynamic and productive team specialized in language processing and information retrieval (www.cs.kuleuven.be/groups/liir/). The KU Leuven offers a competitive wage for its postdoctoral researchers.

The interested candidate sends his or her CV and motivation letter the latest January 15, 2014 to Marie-Francine Moens (sien.moens@cs.kuleuven.be).

PhD position: Intelligent Aids for Multilingual Information Processing

Automated translation still poses a number of research challenges in order to make the translation of documents and retrieval of multilingual information more effective.

We offer a fully paid PhD position of 4 years in the Department of Computer Science at KU Leuven, Belgium starting during the Spring or Summer of 2014. The student will choose his or her PhD topic in the framework of a large national project. Possible topics regard cross-lingual terminology extraction from comparable corpora, cross-lingual information extraction such as semantic role and relation extraction, and cross-lingual retrieval.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated and has a strong interest in natural language processing, statistical machine learning, probabilistic topic modeling, distributional semantics and uncertainty reasoning. He or she has a good mathematical background, strong programming skills, and is proficient in written and spoken communication. He or she is eager to work in a team and can show records of excellent academic achievements. The candidate will be part of a dynamic and productive team specialized in language processing and information retrieval (www.cs.kuleuven.be/groups/liir/). The KU Leuven offers a competitive wage for its PhD students.

The interested candidate sends his or her CV and motivation letter the latest January 15, 2014 to Marie-Francine Moens, sien.moens@cs.kuleuven.be .
